Spring 2008 Pre-Conference Program Schedule

Pre-Conference I Pre-Conference II Pre-Conference III

Finance Skills Needed for Effective Nursing Leadership

The skills needed in nursing leadership have changed dramatically in the last few years. Just being able to cover the schedule and assure adequate orientations for new employees is not enough for the business of health care. Today's nursing leaders are faced with complex justifications, staffing predictions, hours/patient day, FTE calculations, and predicted cost savings, to list a few. This presentation will give step by step examples of how to calculate and justify the staff, equipment and supplies that you need to keep your department providing quality care. In addition, the participant will learn how to evaluate new service lines and how to market current programs offered. Spend a day learning finance in an interactive environment, providing you with useful tools for your department. If you're in leadership, knowing finance is essential! Please bring a calculator to this session.

Managing Bedside Emergencies: Successful Rescue Responses!

Cardiopulmonary arrest, the epitome of a bedside emergency, is well-addressed through the multitude of CPR and ACLS training courses available to health care providers. But what about all those emergencies that fall just short of an arrest? What about those potentially life-threatening situations that could result in a “code” if handled improperly? This program has been designed to answer these questions for nurses practicing in any adult, acute-care setting including medical-surgical, post-anesthesia recovery and critical care areas. We will begin with a commonsense approach to any emergency situation modeled after the primary and secondary surveys used in the emergency department and progress to a discussion of current concerns regarding “failure to rescue” situations. Strategies for successful communication with physicians including the SBAR method will be highlighted. After this, we will tackle a series of case studies of common crisis situations involving chest pain, dyspnea, hypotension, loss of consciousness, bleeding, wound dehiscence, diabetes, and others. Pertinent pathophysiology will be reviewed including myocardial infarction, pulmonary emboli and circulatory shock. Basic principles of oxygenation and hemodynamics will be emphasized as they are so often of prime concern in an emergency and a focal point for nursing intervention. Please join us for an exciting day of learning!

A Special 2-Part Pre-Conference

Putting Patients First: Resolving Ethical Issues in Healthcare

Numerous, unresolved ethical issues cause nurses from all specialties, roles, and settings, frustration and compassion fatigue! In addition, unresolved ethical questions directly influence patient outcomes, the quality of care, and satisfaction with healthcare delivery! This pre-conference workshop will give you insight into the typical ethical issues that interfere with best practices, quality patient care, the patient's/client's best interest, and even retention! More importantly it will present evidence-based strategies for resolving repetitive ethical issues that interfere with the nurse's ability to meet the patient/client's needs!

A Sabbatical for Your Soul: Re-Creational Strategies for Living Well

Ever ask yourself why, even when you need it the most, you have the greatest trouble finding time to care for yourself? Does it ever seem that adding even something that’s good for you is almost impossible in an already jammed schedule? Are you someone who relegates selfcare to a distant second place in an attempt to get everything done? Then this session will be a sabbatical for your soul! It’s about “recreational” strategies that focus on body-mind-spirit balance, common sense, time-outs and well-being. It’s an invitation to “be-friend”
yourself, do some “mental housecleaning” and create an inner simplicity that benefits you and those around you! Practical strategies and life lessons will serve as mirrors for personal reflection and springboards for recharging and change!
