2009 Critical Care Update Pre-Conference Program Schedule

Pre-Conference I Pre-Conference II Pre-Conference III

The Truth About Retention

In case you haven't heard…we're in trouble as a profession, and retaining the best of the best is our top priority. The top reasons people leave are known; the predictors of turnover have been studied and identified. Surveys regarding retention tell what nurses want from their work. Are we listening? Are we brave enough to approach these truths with genuine action? Nurse leaders and healthcare organizations struggle to devise a high-leverage approach to retain their staff. However, the important questions remain unanswered. We have the power to unite our hearts, engage our minds, and create a compassionate plan for retaining staff, forging trusting relationships, and creating a resilient, respected work culture. The work will not be easy, but it most certainly will be worthwhile. This session provides an evidence-based approach to retention, resilience, and relationship integration. Join us on this voyage of discovery & intense dialogue. The time for SYNERGY and SPIRITED inquiry has never been more critical.

The Alphabet Soup of Critical Care:
Recipes for Successful Management

This pre-conference will take a look at the alphabet soup of critical care covering four different topics: (1) IIRS, SIRS and MODS (sepsis and septic shock); (2) Acute Respiratory Failure (ARF) and ARDS (3) Trauma and burns (4) and from the endocrine system DI (diabetes insipidus), SIADH (Syndrome of Inappropriate ADH) DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis), HHNC (Hyperglycemic Hypersomolar Non-Ketotic Coma) and AI (adrenal insufficiency). The recipes for successful management of these potential life-threatening disease processes will be discussed. A special dessert will provide some quick stress reduction strategies for patients, families and care givers!!

Stabotage! Dealing with the Pit Bulls, Skunks, Snakes, Scorpions & Slugs in Your Workplace

Every workplace has them—the pit bulls that hide behind lipstick and designer clothes; snakes who flick their abrasive tongue and voice at any and all, the scorpions who sting you with a slap of their heavy backhand and the slugs…those who are just there and breathing. The effect is that huge amounts of money are lost in productivity, turnover related costs and patient safety factors. Based on 9 national studies released in Zapping Conflict in the Health Care Workplace, The Briles Report on Women in Health Care, Woman to Woman: From Sabotage to Support, and the forthcoming book, 'Is There a Staboteur in Your Midst?… Pit Bulls, Snakes, Scorpions and Slugs in the Workplace'. Participants will learn how to effectively deal with the bad boys and girls of the workplace.
