Program Updates

It is with great sorrow that we note the passing of one of our distinguished faculty members.  Debbie Arnett, RN, MSN passed away November 9, 2008 after a hard fought battle with cancer.  She has been an integral part of our Critical Care Update conference since 2005- this would have been her fifth time joining our faculty.
Debbie has made amazing contributions to nursing education through the years.
She will be missed.

Three of our current faculty have generously offered to replace Debbie's classes in the Critical Care Update.  The updated sessions are:

418 When The Lytes Go Out In The ICU: Managing the Metabolic Mess of Electrolyte Imbalances
Presented by Christine Kessler, RN, MN, CSANP
Critically ill patients often develop electrolyte imbalances requiring a whirlwind of different treatment modalities.  This session will shed light on this metabolic conundrum, providing clinical pearls to aid in detecting, treating and preventing various electrolyte disorders.

426 The Big Chill:  Hypothermia Post  Resuscitation- A New Treatment Option Post Code Arrest
*this session title and description has not changed
Presented by Diane Byrum, RN, MSN, CCRN, CCNS
Patients  who arrest pre-hospital have at least a 90% mortality rate accounting for at  least 300,000 deaths each year in the United States. Increased brain  temperature contributes to ischemic brain damage in patients post cardiac  arrest.  Studies have shown that lowering brain temperature, even by a  few degrees, decreases ischemic damage.  Supportive care and the  prevention of further ischemia are the goals in caring for the patient post  resuscitation.

438 Balloon Pumps 101
Presented by Kathleen Hill, RN, MSN, CCNS
The IABP has been used successfully for the last 3 decades to improve outcomes in patients with cardiogenic shock or failure to wean from bypass.  This presentation is an intensive review for nurses with little regular exposure to IABP technology. An overview of the principles of IABP, followed by commonly experienced case-based troubleshooting exercises will have the participant ready for the next IABP admission. This presentation can prepare the nurse for the questions that arise at the initiation or termination of therapy
